SRIWILAI RESORT AND SPA, SUKOTHAI, THAILAND

Standard

The Sriwilai Sukhothai is located just 2 km from Sukhothai Historic Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s the city’s main attraction, and rather than taking a cab, you can also visit by bike, weather permitting. The hotel also offers free bicycle rental. A hotel-owned Tuk-Tuk shuttle is also available for free.

Many other activities are available in the surrounding area and are posted near reception;. These activities include ceramic workshops, craft activities, and more.

We were well received at Sriwilai, with fresh towels and a welcome drink on our arrival. We were informed that we could take advantage of a 20-30% discount on spa treatments. There were also coupons for discounted drinks and meals at the hotel restaurants.

We booked a room with a balcony and a splendid view into the beautiful green, rural countryside. The room was spacious, decorated in a traditional Sukhothai style, inspired by the lifestyle of Thai farmers. The high ceiling and wooden furniture contributed to the room’s rustic, welcoming feel.

The room was well-equipped, with a flat-screen TV, mini-refrigerator, desk or dressing table, bathrobe, mosquito repellent and a flashlight – a thoughtful addition.

The generously sized bathroom had two sinks and a walk-in shower.

A large infinity edge pool allows you to cool off on hot days and offered a beautiful view of the rice paddies. A gym or fitness room was not available.

Umbrellas, sun loungers and towels were provided at the swimming pool and I took advantage of the opportunity to relax there after a long day of sightseeing. Since it’s adjacent to the restaurant, drinks and small food items could be ordered from there.

I tried the spa twice and the massages were wonderful and affordable.

Breakfast was fairly good with an egg-station, a small western section, as well as many Asian breakfast dishes. The resort charges extra for Espresso drinks which was fine by me.

The hotel is built in perfect harmony with its surroundings, emphasizing nature, well-being and relaxation. You can feel the respect for nature and the intention to offer customers an authentic experience. I highly recommend it for a luxurious experience in nature at an affordable price.

AXEL BEACH (HADDON HALL) HOTEL, MIAMI, FLORIDA, USA

Standard

The Haddon Hall Hotel in South Beach was built in 1939 and achieved some notoriety over the years being part of several movies or TV series which were filmed there.

The hotel It has been recently taken over by AXEL Beach Hotels which operate a few hotels in Spain (see my review of Axel Hotel Madrid), Berlin and Cuba and mainly target a gay (hetero-friendly) clientele. The hotel has a prime location on Collins Avenue just a block away from the beach in the heart of South Beach (Art Deco district). Main attractions such as restaurants, shops, and night life are just a few steps away.

This 3 star hotel offers a hip decoration and spirit whilst maintaining its former bohemian spirit. There is a gym, a pool and a restaurant available (a decent free breakfast is served as well and a wide choice of extra items are available to order at separate cost)

The bar is very popular in the evening and attracts quite a party crowd. There is an also a small swim suit shop located in the lobby (open weekends).

I booked a room with a pool view but did not use the balcony much. The room offers a fridge, but has no coffee or hot water maker. The bathroom was generously sized and the water pressure was fine (usually the water pressure is very weak in most US hotels, so this was a pleasant surprise)

Front desk staff were friendly but not the most efficient. However, the staff at the restaurant were charming, helpful and always ready for a little chat.

I found this hotel to be a budget friendly option (considering the price of hotels in Miami and the US these days). Everybody was in a vacation and party mood and this made this hotel a happy place to be.

WESTIN GRAND CENTRAL, NEW YORK, USA

Standard

The Westin New York Grand Central is located in midtown Manhattan, less than two blocks east of the iconic Grand Central train station.  The hotel is within walking distance of the United Nations Plaza, the Chrysler Building, Bryant Park and Fifth Avenue and public transportation is easily accessible for all other destinations. Uber and Lyft rides and New York Cabs are usually less than a minute away.

I chose the Westin Grand Central because it was completely renovated during Covid and most hotels in New York are offering very dated and small rooms or, on the other hand, are on the super expensive side. (Note that a “destination fee” of US$ 25 per night now applies to all NY hotels)

The rooms in this dynamic hotel were modern with no frills and no unnecessary gimmicks. Marriott’s famous heavenly-beds with plenty of pillows allowed me to sleep very well.

Breakfast, 24 hour room service, a Business Center and a large gym which is open 24/7 are also available.

Check-in and check-out on the Marriott Bonvoy App worked  very well and Express check-out options shows the total bill in the app well ahead of check-out time and is conveniently used by most guests.

Staff at the front desk, and particularly at the Concierge Desk, were helpful and never tired of giving out useful information and their insider tips about New York.

I enjoyed my stay at the Westin Grand Central very much and found this a very comfortable hotel at reasonable rates (for New York).

RENAISSANCE HOTEL, VIENNA, AUSTRIA

Standard

The Renaissance Vienna hotel is a short 2-minute walk from the nearest U-Bahn stop, this modern hotel on a busy street lies 1.5 km from Schönbrunn Palace. The Vienna State Opera is 3.9 km away. It is somewhat away from the city centre but compensates this with very attractive room rates.

Check-in was a bit slow despite checking-in previously using the Bonvoy app. The credit card reader and/or the printer were not working properly and the staff did not really know how to handle it. I also asked for a map of Vienna which was not available and the staff seemed rather uninterested.

My room and the bathroom was on the smaller side but clean with a comfortable bed.

I found my stay at this Marriott property unimpressive and pretty standard. Nothing really to write home about.

I would choose a hotel closer to the city centre next time.

ALTSTADT HOTEL BY RADISSON BLU, SALZBURG, AUSTRIA

Standard

The Radisson Blue Hotel Altstadt is located right in the heart of Salzburg’s Unesco-listed old town centre, within a few steps of Mozart’s birth house. The hotel has two entrances, one on Rudolfskai by the River Salzach, and one on the (more atmospheric) Judengasse within the old town. Salzburg’s old town is one of the best preserved examples of this ecclesiastical town.  Fabulous Baroque architecture and The Sound of Music filming locations can be found on almost every corner – a city quite impossible not to fall in love with.

The hotel has 62 elegant, luxurious rooms and suites. All rooms come with original wooden beams, antique furniture, heavy rugs, white walls hung with framed prints and engravings of old Salzburg, and parquet flooring. Bathrooms have elegant marble sink tops and twin sink basins, and either a walk-in shower or a combination.

Service was excellent on our visit, with friendly, helpful and welcoming staff. Check-in was charming and efficient and my beautiful room faced the Salzach river on the quieter side of the hotel.

An excellent breakfast with a wide choice of food items including freshly prepared waffles and egg dishes is served at the hotel’s Symphonie restaurant on the first floor overlooking the Salzach river.

Public parking areas are located a five-minute walk away. Location and the friendly staff are definitely the best attributes of this hotel and my stay there was excellent.

SHERATON KOWLOON, HONG KONG, CHINA

Standard

Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers was built in 1973 and is perfectly located for both business and leisure guests in Hong Kong. It is accessible to all forms of Hong Kong’s public transport and is just 2 minutes walk from the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station, which provides quick and easy transportation throughout the city. This hotel is ideally located in the Tsim Sha Tsui area and provides excellent shopping and entertainment opportunities, and all the major landmarks are within a short walking distance.

This 5-star hotel offers 782 luxury guest rooms and suites and was recently renovated during the Covid 19 pandemic. Each room is tastefully designed and decorated with simple comfort and convenience in mind; the majority feature breathtaking views of Victoria Harbour and the city.

The hotel offers various restaurant outlets and a top-floor lounge with a spectacular view. It also hosts Hong Kong’s only famous Morton’s of Chicago Steakhouse and Grill.

There is a small swimming pool on the rooftop along with a gym and both offer panoramic views over the city and the harbour. Both facilities seem a bit dated and have not been recently renovated.

I checked in online on the Marriott App but still had to wait at the check-in for some time to receive my room key as there were many people requiring services from the front desk and only two counters were staffed.

Housekeeping staff were fast and efficient and very helpful and were always present on the corridors and made sure that the guests had everything they might need.

This makes the Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers a comfortable hotel offering a full spectrum of services for business and leisure visitors alike.

ORCHARD RENDEZVOUS HOTEL, SINGAPORE

Standard

The Orchard Rendezvous Hotel (formerly Orchard Parade Hotel) is a long-established landmark on the corner of Tanglin and Orchard roads. The easy accessibility to the hotel via subway or taxi is another plus point. I always prefer taxis in Singapore. Public transport to and from Changi airport is inconvenient and time-consuming.

I booked the hotel through a booking platform and reserved a king-size bed. Unfortunately, I was then assigned a double bed. I emailed the hotel to change this and, unfortunately, never got an answer. Also at check-in, a change to a king bed was unfortunately not possible, and I was not happy about that.

The rooms are appropriately equipped without frills and are clean. The hotel has a nice swimming pool, but some plants would be nice. (Construction was going on during my stay.) The staff throughout were very friendly and efficient.

The hotel is good value for money, and I had a pleasant stay.

LE MERIDIEN, KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA

Standard

Together with the Hilton Kuala Lumpur, the Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur are identical sister hotels. They are located directly at KL Sentral Train station which is easily accessible from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) by a direct nonstop train which takes only 28 minutes. There is a covered indoor walkway between the train station and the hotels providing for convenient access.

Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur is a hip hotel (Marriott Group) which offers a cool and colourful setting. I checked-in online well ahead of time and got a message on my Bonvoy app as soon as the room was ready. Check-in at the front desk was therefore only a quick key pick-up stop.

The room was located on the 27th floor with a nice view over the city and the KL Sentral station. A generous room size, a French press coffee maker, as well as a water boiler and a large empty fridge was available. The decor was minimal but functional with a very comfortable bed and plenty of pillows. Bathroom was nice with built in shower bench.

The twin hotels share the same pool, the same gym (which was surprisingly not open 24 hours as per Marriott standards) and the Spa. Both hotels offer plenty of dining options.

NU shopping mall is only 4 minutes walk away via the train station. This shopping centre offers everything that a traveller might need.

My stay at Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur was a very pleasant one and besides the fantastic location the service was good and the staff members that I met were all friendly and helpful.

ASCOTT JAKARTA, INDONESIA

Standard

SERVICED APARTMENT

A serviced apartment is different from your average hotel room. It’s usually fully furnished accommodation, complete with home-like facilities and a number of services that you would find in the best hotels. In a serviced apartment you have access to the complete package including a bedroom (or multiple bedrooms depending on the apartment’s size), fully equipped kitchen, living area, bathroom, parking, WiFi and internet access, TV, washing machine, linen and towels also come as a standard. Housekeeping, room service and a restaurant are usually available too. Access to a gym, swimming pool and meeting rooms are also available at selected locations.

I stayed at the Ascott Jakarta on this trip. Ascott Limited is a Singaporean based lodging company with a strong footprint in Asia. Ascott has more than 700 properties in over 200 cities spanning more than 40 countries around the world.

The Ascott Jakarta Kuningan serviced apartments are connected to the Lotte Shopping Avenue which makes it easy for a quick trip to the supermarket, restaurants, barber shop etc. Everything is kept clean and housekeeping service was efficient and reliable. There is a 24-hour reception desk and guests can easily stay in touch with guest services through a WhatsApp line which enables easy contact regardless of whether the guest is in-house, or at an outside location.

The restaurant offered and indoor and outdoor section and breakfast was offered daily. The price of US $ 10 for breakfast was very moderate and even included an egg station.  (Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner)

I also enjoyed the pool and the gym.

My stay at the Ascott Jakarta was an uncomplicated and easy one. Everybody seemed to be relaxed and a little less stiff than at some hotels. I enjoyed  my stay very much.

THE RITZ-CARLTON, JAKARTA, INDONESIA

Standard

The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta is a skyscraper hotel at Mega Kuningan which is the centre of an upmarket business district. The complex has two towers and the hotel was opened in 2005. The building is 212 m tall and has 48 floors and 4 basement levels. The hotel has 278 club-sized rooms and 55 suites.

Check-in was done swiftly in a separate club floor area where a welcome drink and a hot towel was offered before I was escorted to the room.

What a nice surprise was waiting for me there. The hotel staff had a personal welcome message on the TV screen waiting for me (including my picture, which was cute) and a birthday surprise painted on the window! I found this a truly welcoming gesture.

With a high staff-to-guest ratio, the level of attentiveness is so high that one always feels like one is staying among friends.

The Club lounge offered daily breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and snacks as well as a full dinner. All of my meals were of excellent quality and were delicious. An ever changing meal selection made this a very pleasant experience.

The staff at the Club lounge were highly professional, always ready for a chat, and always addressed guests by name. The lounge claims to be one of the largest in Asia. I cannot praise the staff enough for their unending efforts to make guests feel welcome and to take care of them.

The room was of a large size with a huge marble bathroom and, of course, featured all amenities that one could think of. (including a Nespresso coffee maker).

There are two restaurants in the hotel, a spa, a gym, and a nice swimming pool.

I give this hotel 6 stars for the large oversized rooms, the Club lounge, and the wonderful staff throughout the hotel.
