VILLA MONIKA BOUTIQUE HOTEL, SYLT, GERMANY

Standard

The boutique hotel Villa Monika is a small, charming and very tastefully decorated hotel with warm decor and a cozy ambiance. The room has a seating area, a large bed and the bathroom is equipped with everything you need. A Nespresso machine and a kettle are also available.

In the elegant entrance area there is a large maxi bar (refrigerator of trust) with dishes, glasses, chilled drinks including wine, where guests can fill in a charge form after they have served themselves.

Electronic check-in using a code was completed without any problems. Manager Jasmin was a warm and charming host and I will definitely come back again.

AXEL BEACH (HADDON HALL) HOTEL, MIAMI, FLORIDA, USA

Standard

The Haddon Hall Hotel in South Beach was built in 1939 and achieved some notoriety over the years being part of several movies or TV series which were filmed there.

The hotel It has been recently taken over by AXEL Beach Hotels which operate a few hotels in Spain (see my review of Axel Hotel Madrid), Berlin and Cuba and mainly target a gay (hetero-friendly) clientele. The hotel has a prime location on Collins Avenue just a block away from the beach in the heart of South Beach (Art Deco district). Main attractions such as restaurants, shops, and night life are just a few steps away.

This 3 star hotel offers a hip decoration and spirit whilst maintaining its former bohemian spirit. There is a gym, a pool and a restaurant available (a decent free breakfast is served as well and a wide choice of extra items are available to order at separate cost)

The bar is very popular in the evening and attracts quite a party crowd. There is an also a small swim suit shop located in the lobby (open weekends).

I booked a room with a pool view but did not use the balcony much. The room offers a fridge, but has no coffee or hot water maker. The bathroom was generously sized and the water pressure was fine (usually the water pressure is very weak in most US hotels, so this was a pleasant surprise)

Front desk staff were friendly but not the most efficient. However, the staff at the restaurant were charming, helpful and always ready for a little chat.

I found this hotel to be a budget friendly option (considering the price of hotels in Miami and the US these days). Everybody was in a vacation and party mood and this made this hotel a happy place to be.

WESTIN GRAND CENTRAL, NEW YORK, USA

Standard

The Westin New York Grand Central is located in midtown Manhattan, less than two blocks east of the iconic Grand Central train station.  The hotel is within walking distance of the United Nations Plaza, the Chrysler Building, Bryant Park and Fifth Avenue and public transportation is easily accessible for all other destinations. Uber and Lyft rides and New York Cabs are usually less than a minute away.

I chose the Westin Grand Central because it was completely renovated during Covid and most hotels in New York are offering very dated and small rooms or, on the other hand, are on the super expensive side. (Note that a “destination fee” of US$ 25 per night now applies to all NY hotels)

The rooms in this dynamic hotel were modern with no frills and no unnecessary gimmicks. Marriott’s famous heavenly-beds with plenty of pillows allowed me to sleep very well.

Breakfast, 24 hour room service, a Business Center and a large gym which is open 24/7 are also available.

Check-in and check-out on the Marriott Bonvoy App worked  very well and Express check-out options shows the total bill in the app well ahead of check-out time and is conveniently used by most guests.

Staff at the front desk, and particularly at the Concierge Desk, were helpful and never tired of giving out useful information and their insider tips about New York.

I enjoyed my stay at the Westin Grand Central very much and found this a very comfortable hotel at reasonable rates (for New York).

SAS, SCANDINAVIAN AIRLINES LOUNGE, COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

Standard

I visited the SAS Lounge Copenhagen after my inbound flight by SAS was cancelled (well ahead of time) and I rebooked myself on an earlier Star Alliance flight.

The SAS Lounge Copenhagen is open to SAS premium passengers as well as Business Class passengers and Gold Card Members of Star Alliance.

The lounge is decorated in a mix of urban and rural styles with well known Nordic wood furnishings. There was a comfortable seating area and  plenty of communal tables for working or enjoying a quick bite.

This no frills lounge offers all-day buffet breakfast items, a few healthy dishes such as beetroot or chickpeas salads as well as a soup and the famous Swedish meatballs. Bread was also available but no desserts or sweet items were offered. (Maybe they follow a healthy life-style policy)

No announcements are made in the lounge and depending on the time of day it can become a little crowded.(Note that Scandinavian has drastically cut back on their long-haul network and is struggling financially. A number of their North American destinations are now operated by narrow body A320/321 aircraft and they have pulled out of the Asian market completely.

I had a comfortable and relaxed stay at the SAS Lounge in Copenhagen.

RENAISSANCE HOTEL, VIENNA, AUSTRIA

Standard

The Renaissance Vienna hotel is a short 2-minute walk from the nearest U-Bahn stop, this modern hotel on a busy street lies 1.5 km from Schönbrunn Palace. The Vienna State Opera is 3.9 km away. It is somewhat away from the city centre but compensates this with very attractive room rates.

Check-in was a bit slow despite checking-in previously using the Bonvoy app. The credit card reader and/or the printer were not working properly and the staff did not really know how to handle it. I also asked for a map of Vienna which was not available and the staff seemed rather uninterested.

My room and the bathroom was on the smaller side but clean with a comfortable bed.

I found my stay at this Marriott property unimpressive and pretty standard. Nothing really to write home about.

I would choose a hotel closer to the city centre next time.

ALTSTADT HOTEL BY RADISSON BLU, SALZBURG, AUSTRIA

Standard

The Radisson Blue Hotel Altstadt is located right in the heart of Salzburg’s Unesco-listed old town centre, within a few steps of Mozart’s birth house. The hotel has two entrances, one on Rudolfskai by the River Salzach, and one on the (more atmospheric) Judengasse within the old town. Salzburg’s old town is one of the best preserved examples of this ecclesiastical town.  Fabulous Baroque architecture and The Sound of Music filming locations can be found on almost every corner – a city quite impossible not to fall in love with.

The hotel has 62 elegant, luxurious rooms and suites. All rooms come with original wooden beams, antique furniture, heavy rugs, white walls hung with framed prints and engravings of old Salzburg, and parquet flooring. Bathrooms have elegant marble sink tops and twin sink basins, and either a walk-in shower or a combination.

Service was excellent on our visit, with friendly, helpful and welcoming staff. Check-in was charming and efficient and my beautiful room faced the Salzach river on the quieter side of the hotel.

An excellent breakfast with a wide choice of food items including freshly prepared waffles and egg dishes is served at the hotel’s Symphonie restaurant on the first floor overlooking the Salzach river.

Public parking areas are located a five-minute walk away. Location and the friendly staff are definitely the best attributes of this hotel and my stay there was excellent.

LUFTHANSA BUSINESS CLASS LOUNGE, MUNICH, GERMANY

Standard

My visit to the Lufthansa Business Class Lounge in Munich Airport was an underwhelming experience and nothing to write home about. The lounge is located upstairs, above the security checkpoint and offers a partial view of the security check area). The lounge design is clean and simple, if not to say somewhat boring with no alpine or Bavarian design elements.

The lounge has a standard food and beverage offering, showers, and a small business area along with lounge chairs and a co-working space area near the buffet.

I found this lounge solid and adequate but not more than that.

FLIGHT CHECK: LUFTHANSA

Standard

Bangkok-Munich, Business Class A350-900

Check-in and bag drop was very efficient and was completed in a few seconds.

Boarding was separated for Business and Economy Class, and went smoothly.

The crew welcome on board was warm and charming. Food and beverage was good quality and tasted good.

Unfortunately, the seat configuration is still 2-2-2 and is rather dated. Lufthansa has been planning new layout for more than a  decade now, and my guess is that it will take at least another year before it is finally installed in the first aircraft. By the time all planes are reconfigured, there will definitely be plans for further future changes.

Transit in Munich was a breeze and with a 2 hour layover there was still enough time to go to the lounge. (separate review)

Lufthansa offers a solid product where you know what you can expect and what you get in return.

EVA AIR LOUNGE, BANGKOK, THAILAND

Standard

The EVA Air lounge at Suvarnabhumi Airport is located at the corner of E and F gates (F1) and is open some 20 hours per day. EVA Air operates several flights daily to Taipei and Europe (Amsterdam, Vienna and London).

The EVA Air lounge is spacious, modern and offers a dining area, a common work space (bar-style tables) and a large lounging area. I visited late at night and there was a nice mood light concept in place which I liked very much.

The lounge offers Chinese, Asian and Western food (cold and hot section) as well as a full self-service bar, coffee/tea with sweet desserts including ice-cream. The lounge also offers a business corner and a shower area.

I found this lounge very pleasant and comfortable. The tarmac view on one side and the view into the F pier was also entertaining.

SHERATON KOWLOON, HONG KONG, CHINA

Standard

Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers was built in 1973 and is perfectly located for both business and leisure guests in Hong Kong. It is accessible to all forms of Hong Kong’s public transport and is just 2 minutes walk from the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station, which provides quick and easy transportation throughout the city. This hotel is ideally located in the Tsim Sha Tsui area and provides excellent shopping and entertainment opportunities, and all the major landmarks are within a short walking distance.

This 5-star hotel offers 782 luxury guest rooms and suites and was recently renovated during the Covid 19 pandemic. Each room is tastefully designed and decorated with simple comfort and convenience in mind; the majority feature breathtaking views of Victoria Harbour and the city.

The hotel offers various restaurant outlets and a top-floor lounge with a spectacular view. It also hosts Hong Kong’s only famous Morton’s of Chicago Steakhouse and Grill.

There is a small swimming pool on the rooftop along with a gym and both offer panoramic views over the city and the harbour. Both facilities seem a bit dated and have not been recently renovated.

I checked in online on the Marriott App but still had to wait at the check-in for some time to receive my room key as there were many people requiring services from the front desk and only two counters were staffed.

Housekeeping staff were fast and efficient and very helpful and were always present on the corridors and made sure that the guests had everything they might need.

This makes the Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers a comfortable hotel offering a full spectrum of services for business and leisure visitors alike.
