Zurich-Muscat:

Business Class Lounge, Muscat Airport:

Muscat-Dubai:

There was only 1 counter available for Business Class check-in and the waiting time was rather long as the check-in staff were serving economy class passengers who were carrying excess check-in bags and did not want to pay for excess baggage. So the discussions seemed endless until they finally found a solution and I could check-in.

Boarding started almost 1 hour before take-off (Ground staff explained that the captain wanted to depart 15 min ahead of schedule) but at the end the airport slot was not available and we departed on time. The Business Class section is very small with only 18 seats and each seat offers plenty of space and privacy. The booking on this flight was very light with only about 6 passengers in the front section. The crew was efficient but not charming or friendly. Service was done quickly as this was a 10pm departure and passengers wanted to sleep.  I did the same and opted for a breakfast rather than a dinner which was served 2 hours before landing. (A bit too early for my preference as the flight time was only 5.30 h)

Arrival at Muscat was a tedious experience. We landed on time but the stairs were not available for 15 min for disembarkation. After the stairs finally docked on the plane there was a further 5 min delay for the special business class bus. Meanwhile, all economy passengers had already disembarked via the rear stairs and all 3 passenger buses arrived at the terminal building at the same time. Most passengers had connecting flights and went upstairs where a small security checkpoint was located and worked very efficiently.

On departure from Muscat airport, I visited the lounge in the rather old airport terminal and was pleasantly surprised. It  was a large stylish lounge. There was a bar area as well as a self-service area are where drinks and food was presented. Friendly staff were available everywhere. Food choice was good, warm and cold breakfast items were available as well as fruit and other snacks. I did not see any alcoholic beverages, but I expect they were available in the bar section.

Boarding took place again via buses and the small cramped waiting area was packed with people and many were standing in line for the wrong flights. It was a bit chaotic and there were no dedicated gates or doors for business class passengers. After all buses finally arrived at the aircraft at the same time there was another short delay as the cabin cleaning seemed not to be finished.

The crew at the boarding door was very friendly and efficient and boarding was quick. There was a small breakfast service on this flight which was only about 50 minutes long. Aircraft was an Airbus 330-200. Configuration: 20/196

The Dusit Thani Krabi Hotel is a large american style resort with very little “thai” characteristics. The travel time from/to airport is about 40 min by hotel limousine. Rooms and suites are very modern, simply decorated, comfy and clean. Staff at the hotel is very attentive and curteous.

Location is wonderful as the beach is very long, clean and quiet. There are no motorsports, beach massages, or sellers of any kind which makes it a perfect place to relax.

The hotel offers 3 Restaurants. Mangosteen which offers thai and international food, Gecko’s which is italian and Malati with indian and thai food. I loved the atmosphere of Gecko’s as it is al fresco and offers authentic italian pizza, pasta and much more and the price of the food is very reasonable. Mangosteen’s is also nice and giving you a wide choice, including taking care of special requests.  I found the quality of the food served at the hotel very good and all meals were delicious. Unfortunalely most guests eat outside the hotel which is a pity. I found mostly empty restaurants in the evening even though the hotel was nearly fully booked.

There are 2 pools with sun-loungers, a huge green garden area and of course the lovely sandy beach. There is a kid’s club and a ice cream parlour available at the pool areas as well. There is no free water oder cold towel service provided. Plenty of beach towels are available for use.

The gym is open 24 hours which is very convenient for international travelers with jetlag. Breakfast at Mangosteen offers a very wide choice including some special features for children.

We stayed in club room suite which is well worth a little extra money. In the very stylish club lounge you can enjoy separate check-in/check out, all day drinks, afternoon snacks, and a generous happy hour buffet with cold and hot snacks and free cocktails and wine every night.

The martini bar offers a daily happy hour and live music entertainment nightly.

Free WIFI is available in the rooms and all hotel areas. The Dusit Thani in Krabi is a good choice for travelers who appreciate a large international resort with a wonderful clean long beach.

a special coffee menu is available

This was my first flight since OS changed their business class seats. They are fully flat, state of the art, air cushioned and large TV-style screen (touch function or handset with sensor mouse)

Boarding in VIE was chaotic. There is a very small boarding area where everybody has to make a 180° turn first to go to the gate, then another 180° turn to go down a very small escalator down the jetbridge. They tried to make a premium-C-class boarding, which failed as there were more than 200 Y class pax standing there and getting through them was impossible. I now know where the expression “cattle class” comes from. It was like a stampede.

I was glad to be on board. Happy about my seat and time to relax. Inflight Service was very good and attentive as always.

Dinner service started quickly. Table set up with a drink, then choice of 3 first courses (1 meat (Tafelspitz), 1 fish and a soup (red lentil, yummy) served from a trolley)

Hot Meal, then dessert (choice of 3) fresh fruit and cheese

A small shortcoming were the reading lights which did not work on the entire AB side (probably just a glitch) and the Airshow Main Screen was kept on bright during the entire night rest.

Nice blanket and pillow (including linen for cushion and linen to cover up the seat for sleeping) a very nice treat

Got a good night’s sleep and a quick breakfast with freshly prepared fried eggs which were a real highlight. So far the only airline in the world which serves fresh fried eggs in C-Cl. Landing cards were given out inflight but NO fast track cards. That is a bit of a let down.

All in all a very pleasant experience from the start of the trip in ZRH to landing in BKK. (Mobile check in worked perfectly)
