Club Lounge:

KL by night:

The Mandarin Oriental offers 571 rooms including suites and executive apartments. It is set between the Petronas Twin Towers and KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Center) Park perfectly located for the city’s main business addresses. (ca. 1 hour away from the airport by car)

There are numerous dining outlets, from classic Cantonese to an all-day buffet at Mosaic restaurant, poolside snacks to the Mandarin Grill or contemporary Japanese at Wasabi Bistro.

I stayed in Club Floor with access to the oversized club lounge which offers all day drinks and generous food served from morning to night. All the food that I had was fresh and tasty and delicious.

The rooms are a bit on the older side, being the Mandarin Oriental one of the first luxury hotels  to open in KL years ago. The lobby, swimming pool, SPA and other outlets have already been renovated while the room renovation will follow. (I must say though, the rooms are still in a very good shape; age does not show too much) The hospitality of the staff made up for this and I had a fine stay there.

Sunset view from the club lounge balcony

Arrival at the Ritz-Carlton Naples was very warm and I was escorted immediately to the Club Level Lounge where check-in took place. The lounge is a fantastic place to undwind and get 5  diffrent meal presentations per day as well as personalized concierge service and  a very personal service all the staff which were extremly charming and pleasant at all times.

The club level room had a great view of the gulf of mexico with a balcony offering a wonderful view over the hotel grounds, swimming pools, the white beach and the magnificent sunsets.

The hotel offers 450 rooms, including 35 suites and 70 club level rooms. There are 7 dining experiences offering everything from easy poolside eating to The Grill elegant dining venue. There is a high-tech entertainment lounge as well as a kidz club. A spa with over 30 treatment rooms, a great gym and beach house for rent are also available.

The beach is fantastic and endless and clean. Regular dolphin swim-by’s were to see in the morning which was great.

The Ritz-Carlton Naples is a fantastic place for taking a vacation in Florida on the gulf of mexico. Its chic, but top-modern at the same time and it’s best feature is probably the staff. They were are all very helpful, warm and lovely. Their interaction with the guests is simply just great.

There are lots of surprises from the staff, such as thank you chocolates for “beeing a fan” on facebook, to a clean washed car upon departure or getting a travel map from the lounge concierge without having asked for one and a package of warm house made cookies to make the long drive a bit sweet. A great experience.  Price range is on the higher side, but if you are up for some luxury, i can highly recommend the Ritz-Carlton Naples in Florida.

AVANI RIVERSIDE HOTEL, BANGKOK, THAILAND

Standard

I arrived at the AVANI Riverside Bangkok Hotel using valet parking and was promptly escorted to the hotel’s main lobby on the 11th floor. Check-in was quick and easy. All rooms in the hotel enjoy magnificent views of Bangkok’s famous Chao Praya River and the Bangkok city skyline. The standard rooms are on the smaller side, but are practical and furnished in light brown timber with minibar, kettle with coffee and tea, iron/ironing board, safe, hairdryer, free wifi, cable TV and alarm clock. The bathroom has a large shower with a rain shower type shower head. My room was located on the 25th floor near the AvaniSpa and AvaniFit spa and fitness facilities and was readily accessible to the rooftop swimming pool via an internal staircase.

The hotel has an infinity edge rooftop swimming pool which enjoys stunning views of the city. The Attitude bar and restaurant is located on the same level and is an amazing venue for drinks, bites and evening entertainment whilst enjoying the stunning city views. The crowd is young and hip. There is a sommelier who can help with wine selection, and there is a live DJ nightly. These offerings are unusual in the Bangkok hotel scene and add to the guest experience.

The hotel’s main lobby is located on the 11th floor and has great views over the river and the grounds of AVANI Riverside’s sister hotel, the Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort. The hotels have its own hydroponic farm which produces herbs and salads etc. which are used in the various outlets. This is an amazing initiative and I will follow up on its progress.

The AVANI Riverside has several F&B outlets, including Skyline restaurant which serves a nice breakfast and fresh, delicious bites all day. You can also a enjoy a coffee and a cake at the Pantry at AVANI designer deli, or a cocktail and tapas at the Long Bar. Free wifi and charging stations are available in the lobby.

The hotel has its own shopping plaza and a bridge leading to the sister Anantara Resort from where a complimentary shuttle boat will ferry hotel guests to and from the Sapan Taksin BTS station. Not only is this is a pleasant and novel way to travel, it enables guests to avoid Bangkok’s heavy traffic.

I greatly enjoyed my stay at this brand new addition to the AVANI hotel portfolio and can highly recommend it for any guests seeking a hotel with a contemporary urban chic ambiance.

I was cordially received at the Peninsula Manila on disembarking the hotel limousine which has picked me up at Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Check-in was quickly done in the privacy of my deluxe suite which was 124 sq m in size and ideal for a short business trip with in-suite meetings or a small family stay.

The suite featured a oversized bedroom with a walk-in closet and a nicely sized bathroom with separate tub and shower. There was a huge living working room with comfortable sofa area and a 4-seat dining table. A separate work desk was available both in the living room and in the bedroom. A nespresso machine,  a minibar and 2 flat screen TV’s were also available. A separte toilet for guests was featured as well.

The Peninula Manila is ageing but has not lost anything of its elegance and charme.

The lobby is chic place to see and to be seen. People dress up for afternoon tea and it is always busy with its beautiful marble floor and unique ceiling.

The staff at the Peninsula Manila are extremly corteous and friendly.

The club lounge was temporary set up on the third floor where drinks, sandwiches and sweet items are available all day long. In the evening there is a choice of hot dishes  and savouries as well.

I had a very comfy stay at the Peninsula Manila enjoying the elegance and the superb service.

KEMPINSKI GRAND HOTEL DES BAINS, ST.MORITZ, SWITZERLAND

I arrived in St.Moritz by train taking the scenic albula line. A very beautiful train ride indeed. I was picked up at the station by a Kempinski driver with a deluxe BMW.

My room was already prepared and check-in was swift. The rooms are unfussy and tidy, nothing more. Bathrooms nicely appointed and I had a balcony with a small coffee table and a chair, perfect for a little break outside.

The hotel features 3 restaurants, a gourmet restaurant called Cà d’oro serving mediterean cuisine, the Enoteca with modern regional dishes (both were closed on my visit) and the Restaurant Les Saisons which serves breakfast and and steaks and sushi in the evenings.

The large lobby bar is an enchanting place, great to see and to be seen.

On 2,800 sqm the Kempinski The Spa has four different saunas, a steam bath, a laconium, an indoor pool, Kneipp baths, a gym, a sun terrace and a separate ladies’ spa. It is highly impressive and I enjoyed it very much. I can only imagine how nice it would be to visit that marvelous alpine  spa in the winter time.

The hotel staff is professional and international.  I have overheard a few german guests to complain about finding it difficult to find a german-speaking staff.

The Kempinski Grand hotel des bains is a truly gem in the alps. There are some great offers available for off season deals but keep in mind that the hotels closes twice a year during low season.

The hotel is built on the site of a 13th Century Monastery – part of the foundation is exhibited (under a glass floor in the spa) and many artifacts are on display in the hotel. It is combining a five-star luxury hotel with a wonderfully preserved piece of history which makes it a truly a unique hotel experience.

Enjoying a peaceful location in Malá Strana, The Mandarin Oriental, Prague is a serene retreat infused with centuries of character. With an acclaimed spa and beautiful rooms, they are offering a glimpse into the past, whilst embracing the future.

Check-in was a breeze and I was offered a voucher for a welcome drink at the bar and a free wifi password coupon. (for all guests which book the room online) I was escorted to my suite by an eager team member which gave me a short overview about the hotel, its history as well as the facilities of the hotel, such as the spa, the restaurant and the bar and some brief information about the location and the nearby sights of Prague.

Mandarin Oriental hotels in Europe strive to have a top notch service with a little bit of “asian” touches every now and then. I found this goal well achieved with beautifully appointed rooms and suites, a top level luxury spa and a modern restaurant with an historic stone wine cellar which features a possibility for a small group setting. Outdoor seating is especially popular during the warm season.

Rooms and suites are tastefully decorated with generously sized bathrooms. Rainshower, bathtub and a TV as well as luxury amenities are available and a sleep promoting pillow spray at turn-down service is provided.

I had a dinner at Spices restaurant which was excellent, perfect service and a beautiful dessert included.

Breakfast buffet was solid and I really loved the reading material concept. You are given a tablet with all your newspapers and magazines downloaded which is much easier to read than bulky paper editions and more eco-friendly too.

The golden city of Prague is beautiful and offers lots of things to see and explore. I would definitely recommend a stay at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

THE RITZ-CARLTON, BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

Smooth taxi ride from Budapest Airport to the hotel. Friendly helpful doorman and warm greetings at the front desk with a smart checkin. The hotel is brand new in a historic building which was built in the 18th century. The location is in the buisness center of the town, right on Ersezebet ter adjecent to the “fashion street” .

The design is in a very modern style, lots of beige colours with plenty of blue elements which are representing the Danube river. The suite I was given was yet unused and I was the first guest ever residing there. It was tastefully designed, with a small “kiosk” type minibar featuring a Nespresso maker, a minibar and a small souvenir shop. There was a separate guest toilet and the master bathroom was equipped with a bathtube as well as a shower. The shower itself was a bit on the smaller side, given the size of the suite. Plenty of towels and luxury amenities were also available. The bed was very comfy with plenty of pillows. (Pillow menu is available)

The bar on the main level has street access and is an attraction of its own. Nice comfortable lounge chairs where you can overlook the busy street outside or have a peaceful conversation or a drink at the bar.

Breakfast is served in the main lobby under a crystal dome. You can find your basics on a buffet while drinks and egg dishes and other specialities will be served to your table. The restaurant is a bistro style place, with modern furniture but hip staff which are dressed in all jeans uniforms. There is a large indoor seating as well as a cute small patio for outside dining overlooking the busy fashion street. I had a steak with a salad with a soup and it was all excellent.

After the soft opening of the hotel there will be also a SPA available as well a club level featuring a lounge and separate checkin/out desks customly-built for the modern exclusive traveller.

I can highly recommend the Ritz-Carlton in Budapest. A nice luxury hotel, away from the tourist crouds but still in a great location from where you can reach everything in minutes

WESTIN EXCELSIOR HOTEL, FLORENCE, ITALY

Standard

We stayed there in the middle of a peak season. Hotel was easy to find with the GPS of the rental car and they provide valet garage parking.

The welcome was very friendly and charming and the receptionist told us a little bit about the location and the facilities. The hotel has high ceilings and is beautiful decorated in the typical tuscany style with lots of art. Old, but yet modern with all high tech features that you might need. The deluxe room was very spacious with an enormous bathroom, plenty of towels and amenities. The bed was heavenly indeed. A/C worked well and the room was quiet so we had a wonderful sleep.

Breakfast is wonderful and offers everything that you might want to wish for. A cute lobby bar with delicious appetizers or small finger food is also available until late night.

One of the best things about the Westin Excelsior is the roof top restaurant. A fantastic modern open air bar/restaurant which offers a wonderful view all over the city and the river. We had afternoon drinks there with a great sunset view, as well as a delicious dinner at night.

Staff are friendly everywhere and make you feel very welcome. Location is great, everything is just a few steps away and in walking distance. A wonderful hotel, which I would visit again anytime.

VIER JAHRESZEITEN KEMPINSKI HOTEL, MÜNCHEN, GERMANY

Standard

The hotel is located right in the city center, just next to the opera, Munich’s upscale shopping area and many popular sights such as Marienplatz, Viktutalienmarkt, Platzl (Hofbräuhaus etc) are within walking distance. I arrived at the Vier Jahreszeiten Hotel early afternoon and the check-in was swift and efficient as the front office was not busy. However no information about the hotel features were given such as the restaurant and bar, opening hours, spa information or other facts.

My business room was tidy, spotlessly clean and suitably furnished. The size of the bathroom was average but smartly outfitted with plenty of towels available and including a rain shower. For me the best asset of the hotel was the Kempinski Spa. There are very few downtown hotels in Europe which offer a swimming pool (indoor) with an in- and outdoor relaxing area. The spa is located on the top floor of the hotel. Massage and other services are also available. The view from the spa of the hotel is very nice during the day as well as in the evening/nighttime.

I must also point out the newly renovated Schwarzreiter restaurant, which is a bistro style and fine dining restaurant at the same time. (2 sections) Small meals or exquisite dining are served as well as Ian Baker’s famous patisseries. The hotel bar is a popular meeting spot for locals and travellers alike and the nice homestyle lobby area is often referred as Munich’s biggest living room.

I had a pleasant sleep but was rather surprised that I could not find a coffee maker in the room. It’s been a very long time since I stayed in a hotel room where no coffee maker or at least a hot water kettle was available. I guess this should be standard in a first-class hotel and was very disappointed. Since the check-out agent did not inquire about my stay at all, I gave her my opinion about that issue. She gave me a very impolite and patronising answer, which I found impertinent for an employee of a five-star hotel like the Kempinski. Apparently some rooms are not provided with coffee makers while others room categories are. I found this a bit of a letdown. I was explained that if I had ordered a wake up call, the operator would have asked me for coffee or tea service upon waking up. Good to know for next time.

All in all I had a pleasant stay at the Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski Hotel even if the front desk staff were not fullfilling the high standards of Kempinski Hotels in other locations.

LES TROIS ROIS GRAND HOTEL, BASEL, SWITZERLAND

A prestigious hotel with a proud history
There are many tales to tell about Les Trois Rois. The guest book reads like a “Who’s who” of world history. Napoleon, Elizabeth II, Pablo Picasso, Thomas Mann and many other leading figures have enjoyed the hotel’s legendary hospitality. And this will remain so as long as the Three Kings adorn the facade: Basel’s Grand Hotel will continue to be a home from home for many famous guests.

Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois (English: Hotel of the Three Kings) in Basel, until 1986 usually identified by its German-language name, Hotel drei Könige, is sometimes cited as one of Switzerland’s oldest hotels. It is located on the left bank of the Rhine, a few paces downstream of the city’s first bridge across the river.

Long tradition and much luxury distinguish this hotel. From the moment you arrive and your car is valet-parked to the moment you leave you always feel pampered. Check-in was extremly fast and by the time we arrived at the room the bags were already put in the room. (within less than 4 minutes). A great view over the rhine river and all most modern features are available. There is a floor heater in the chic bathroom, all high-tech B&O music and TV equipment, a free minibar, free internet and much more. The bar was voted to Basel’s most popular bar in 2015.

There are 2 restaurants, the Brasserie which offers a wide choice of swiss and french food with a great view (14 gaut-millau points) suits all tastes. The Cheval Blanc with Chef Peter Knogl just reached it’s 3rd Michelin Star as well as 19 gaut-millau points is probably the best french haute cuisine restaurants in Basel. A enormous wine selection and a cigar lounge are also available.

The Les Trois Rois Grand Hotel in Basel is the finest hotel the city has to offer with world class service, fantasic staff and a beautiful view day and night.

I can highly recomend the hotel for a wonderful stay in Basel. (Prepare to book early during the watch fairs)
